            INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVE BRIEFINGS:
KADEK: MHP a Danger for Peace
56 days before the snap polls in Turkey the ultra-right Nationalist
Action Party (MHP) is attracting public attention. They attempt
to overthrow the recently adopted reform package
with the help of the Turkish constitutional court. Now Mesut Yilmaz,
president of the Motherland Party, questions the coalition government
which could result in a postponement of the polls. The ultra-nationalists
focus their efforts on the Kurdish leader Ocalan who the MHP would
very much like to see on the gallows.
This intention, though, seems to be obsolete after the abolishment
of the death penalty. Therefore they demand to further tighten at
least the hard conditions of Abdullah Ocalans solitary confinement.

In a statement for the Frankfurt-based pro-Kurdish Mesopotamian
              News Agency (MHA)
the Presidential Council of the Kurdistan Freedom and Democracy
Congress (KADEK) gave its opinion on these activities. There the
MHP was denounced as war-mongers for attempting to revoke the reforms.
While Turkey were keen to master the permanent crisis the MHP would
do everything to even make it worse.
Anything that could result in a new flare-up of the war should
be avoided. Therefore, KADEK would also be ready to support Turkeys
push for a target date for the beginning of membership negotiations
with the EU. For this purpose all political or diplomatic options
available would be employed. Furthermore, the Presidential Council
demanded an improvement of the arrest conditions of its president.

In the long run, therefore, Abdullah Ocalans freedom were
to be envisaged, or else there could be no solutions for the problems
at hand nor would a stable peace be possible.
